Viewpoints
The dam itself is a remarkable viewpoint. At the beginning the trail is ascending and while going up the view gets better and better on each step you take. The view of the dam, the forest surrounding it and the mountains in the background is magical. The most “demanding” part is at the beginning (the first 15 minutes). The rest of the route does not have any significant difficulties. But the route is truly magnificent since you are walking in between the dense forest “Adelfoi” and the dam.
Right next to the Xyliatos dam is the Xyliatos picnic area, which is a few minutes away with a car. You may have your picnic there and enjoy the waterfall which appears during heavy rainfall and of course when the dam gets full. The waterfall is unique and impressive.
Starting points
The trail starts right next to the Xyliatos dam. The GPS coordinates are depicted in the table below in Natural Trail Information.
Personal comments
To be honest, I was surprised when i first hiked this trail. I was not expecting it to be so beautiful. I am not sure why 😅. The dam, the dense forest, the mountains and the reflection into the water; all blend in and make a unique picturesque landscape. Since the trail is so short and amazing, this could replace a normal/routine Sunday walk in the city park. If you have the time then I recommend you to visit “Oktipetra: A rare and imposing huge rock“, which is 10 minutes away from the Xyliatos dam.
