The river trail in Kalopanagiotis: A wonderful hidden oasis

by Savvas Michail

Description

In the heart of Kalopanagiotis there is a hidden trail path! The river trail is a short but unbelievably beautiful! The dense forest and vegetation with the river “Setrachos” and the watermills found along the way shape a unique and spectacular view. The sudden change of concrete civilisation to such a greenery environment makes the hiker be in awe! The river trail in Kalopanagiotis (or the trail of the water) is truly a wonderful hidden oasis worth visiting.

The natural trail of the water or the river trail 3.9 km, it is categorised as easy and for sure it is suitable for everyone. The duration of the trail is around 1 hour and the maximum elevation is 715 metres. Below I will provide an even shorter version of the hike with a total 1.7km, which is rather a walk than a hike. Additional information about the full circuit is also provided further below.

Viewpoints

The whole trail is a viewpoint located in the heart  of the village. A scenic  route that will charge your batteries for sure. The hiker will come across three watermills. The first one is the Kykkos watermill, the second one is called Chadjilambou and the last one Savvas’s watermill. You will also pass by a venetian bridge style, in a perfect condition, where next to it there are 11 natural sulphur springs. These springs along the river Setrachos form a unique environment that cannot be found anywhere else in the island.

Starting points

The starting point is a few metres away from the lift found in the main road of Kalopanagiotis! Initially the starting point was very beautiful but now they have created a parking area, which is also helpful for the visitors. The exact GPS location is provided  at the Natural trail information table.

Personal comments

The trail is spectacular and for sure worth visiting! It is very short and suitable for everyone. There is no significant elevation gain/loss and the terrain is easy to walk. I have done the shorter version though, hence the information in this article it’s about that! The shorter version is mostly under shade, thus it can be done in all seasons. In case you want to do the original circuit, then follow the guidelines in the link right here.

Kalopanagiotis is one of the villages that do the Christmas markets so you may choose to combine it at that period of time, thus hike and also visit the Christmas market.

Between Kalopanagiotis and Oikos villages there is a winery in the high peaks of the mountains. You may also choose to visit the winery and enjoy the magnificent view from the top with a glass of wine. The table seats are limited, therefore you need to reserve in advance if you choose the wine tasting or tours.

Another hidden gem is the safari with the quad bikes found while entering the village of Kalopanagiotis. The tour is really nice and if you are lucky enough, you may see the Cypriot mouflons.
