Description
Oktipetra is a rare and imposing huge rock located in the east of the Xyliatos in a rocky area. This strangely created rock exceeds 30 meter in height and the Xyliatos community have named it “Oktipetra” or “Stitipetra” (en: standing rock). The rock is a rare geological formation in the colour of graphite and according to the Xyliatos community website attracts the attention of international researchers for carrying out further scientific studies since this type of bedrock cannot be found anywhere else.
In 2010 an observation point was created there as part of the rural development programs managed by the Department of Forests. The observation point consists of a beautiful kiosk and a bench where the visitor can sit, relax and enjoy the magnificent view. Beside the view of the “Oktipetra”, the visitor may also view the occupied town of Morfou and the “Adelfoi” forest.
Personal comments
Words cannot fully describe the view that you will see by visiting this place. When you reach the viewpoint you will be surprised by the formation of this rock and how big it is. The surface of the rock looks like a pile of smaller rocks, which makes you wonder if someone intentionally created this with patience and precision. You may enjoy an even better view by going up to the mountain right across “Oktipetra” and have a panoramic view of the rock and the surrounding area. This viewpoint is not so popular but it is definitely worth visiting.
Tip: If you prefer a clear photo, park your car a bit further away so you get a beautiful picture of pure nature.
