10 hidden natural trails that awaits you to explore them

A list of 10 hidden natural trails is given below that awaits you to explore them. Some of them are popular and some unknown, but each one of them has something impressive to offer. These trails were presented in the TV show «Omorfi mera kathe mera» ([en] “Beautiful day every day”) at RIK 1 channel and a short video excerpt of the TV show is provided below.

 1  Avakas Gorge

Avakas Gorge Natural Trail

The Avakas Gorge is a very popular natural trail where hundreds of tourists and locals visit it yearly. Its level of difficulty is characterised as moderate and it is a linear trail of nearly 1.2 km. The duration for completing it, is about 1-2 hours. It begins as a country road and then enters into the gorge offering magnificent views.  The trail is located in the district of Paphos.

Impressive because: of the gorge itself. Avakas gorge is a pure miracle of nature and it is totally worth visiting.

 2  Athasia’s Cave / Moutti tis Athasias

Spilia tis Athasias Natural Trail

The natural trail «Athasia’s cave/Moutti tis Athasias» is a hidden and not so popular trail located in Larnaca and specifically in the area of the Vavatsinia village. It is an easy and linear trail of nearly 2.2 km. It begins as a country/forest road for around 1.5 km and then the actual trail begins. The duration for completing the trail is about 1 hour (~ 4.4km).

Impressive because: of the cave. It is believed that the cave was created during the Venetian times in the search of gold and copper.

 3  Cape Aspro

Cape Aspro Natural Trail

The Cape Aspro natural trail is way different from the other ones in the list. The trail goes through an white rocky area, ascending most of the time while reaching the peak of the mountain which is ~200 meters above the sea level. It is a linear trail and a difficult one of nearly 5km long. Thus the ~10km can be completed in ~4 hours. The trail is located in Limassol and specifically in the Pissouri region.

Impressive because: of the view from the top of the white cliffs and the endless blue of the sea.

 4  Politiko – Machairas

Politiko - Machairas Natural Trail

The trail Politiko – Machairas belongs to the Machairas forest. It is a linear and a difficult trail. It’s length is 5km but it can be extended with an extra 2km if you want to reach the Machairas Monastery. Therefore with the return, the total ~14km can be completed in a little bit more than 4 hours. The trail is in the Nicosia district.

Impressive because: of the gorge forged between the mountains and the Pediaios river running through them.

 5  «Gyrillithkia»

Gyrillithkia Natural Trail

The Gyrillithkia natural trail is located in Larnaca and specifically in the Odou village. It is a circular trail and of moderate level. It is 6.5km long and it needs around to 1 hour and 30 to 40 minutes to be completed. The first 2km are strenuous and ascending but also the most beautiful part of the trail since you are into nature. The rest of the path follows a paved road towards the Odou village, thus returning to the starting point.

Impressive because: of the rocky mountain, the panoramic view of the farm fields and the village of Odou’s.

 6  Xystarouda – Agiasma – Vasiliki

Xystarouda - Agiasma - Vasiliki Natural Trail

The Xystarouda – Agiasma – Vasiliki is a very beautiful trail due to its running streams and dense forest and vegetation. It is a difficult trail and linear one of 5.3km long. It’s difficulty lies on the strenuous descending hike of around ~2km and the rest is a challenging ascending route. The 5.3km can be done in ~2 hours or more depending on your stamina and speed. The trail is located in Nicosia district but belongs to the Paphos forest.

Impressive because: of the dense vegetation and forest and the streams running in the heart of the valley.

 7  Pikrovrisi tis Merikas

Pikrovrisi tis Merikas Natural Trail

The trail «Pikrovrisi tis Merikas» is found in Kalo Chorio Oreinis in Nicosia district. It is an easy trail, which can be done as linear and circular (circular through the village). It’s length is 4.7km and needs around 1 hour to complete it. With the return the distance goes up to 9.4km and needs around 2 hours to finish it. The trail goes through the gorge, walking on a wooden pathway next to the river called «Maroullenas» and then ascends to the point where you have a beautiful panoramic view of the gorge and the river. The rest of the trail is quite easy as most of it is a forest road.

Impressive because: of the wooden pathway along the gorge, the river Maroullenas and also the rare volcanic rock formations.

 8  «Fountoukodasos»

Fountoukodasos Natural Trail

The trail «Fountoukodasos» (hazelnut forest) is located in Polystypos, which is considered among the top 5 villages with the highest altitude in Cyprus. The trail is easy, linear and 1.7km long. It goes through the hazelnut trees (better hike it in April) and needs around 30-40 minutes to be completed. The village belongs to Nicosia District.

Impressive because: of the hazelnut forest itself.

 9  «Palia Vrysi»

Palia Vrysi Natural Trail

The trail «Palia Vrysi» is found in Gourri in Nicosia District. It is a moderate level trail, linear of nearly 900 meters. The 900 meters can be done in ~30 minutes, thus the return comes up to 1.8km and needs 40-60 minutes to complete it. At the end of the trail the waterfall «Mavritsios» is found. The water runs when there is heavy rainfall, usually in February and March.

Impressive because: of dense forest and the waterfall found at the end of the trail called «Mavritsios»

10 The trail of Water/Watermill

Watermill Natural Trail

The trail of Watermill or the trail of “Water” is found in Kalopanagiotis, in Nicosia district. The trail goes along the river Setrachos in dense vegetation and forest. It is a very easy trail of 1km long and can be done in under 20 minutes. The trail is linear, thus with the return you will cover up to 2km in around 30-40 minutes.

Impressive because: of the beautiful trail in the dense vegetation and the river Setrachos running next to it.
